The pictures show Herne Bay Pier, the end of the Old Pier and the new Neptune's Arm. The sunsets in Herne Bay can be very colourful, unfortunately it can not be fully appreciated in this photo. The present pier is what is left of the pier built in 1890 and Pier Pavilion Sports Centre was built in 1976 following a fire. The end of the Old Pier is the landing-stage and restaurant of the current pier, but unfortunately the bridging between the two was partly destroyed by severe storms in 1978 and 1979. The remaining parts were demolished in 1980 for safety. There are however plans to re link the two in the future. Details of the plans should be included on this site in the future. Neptune's Arm was completed in 1995 to protect the land between the Pier and Clock tower from storm damage and flooding and provides once again a very different view of the town from the observation tower at the end. A panoramic photo created from photots taken from the observation tower can be seen here. The arm also creates a harbour allowing boats to be launched 3 hours either side of high tide.
